  1. What are the common causes of knee pain?

  • Osteoarthritis (wear and tear)

    • Injury to ligaments, meniscus etc

    • Osteoporosis (Calcium deficiency)

    • Overuse and Mechanical (Tendinitis etc)

    • Rheumatoid Arthritis

    • Synovitis (swelling of the tissues) etc.

2.                   Is my knee pain due to arthritis or injury?

    In case of history of definite injury, usually that will be the cause. However, both can co-exist also. In severe arthritis, even a trivial injury can increase the pain.

3.                   When should I see an orthopaedic doctor for knee pain?

    Initially, you can apply ice pack and elevation. However, if the pain is severe, for a long duration or you are unable to walk properly, it is better to consult an Orthopaedician.

4.                   Do I need an X-ray or MRI for knee pain?

    Most of the cases can be managed with an XRay. However, if the Orthopaedics surgeon suspects an internal injury or XRay cannot provide the information, then MRI will be necessary.

5.                   Can knee pain go away on its own?

    Trivial knee pain may go away. However, persistent pain should not be ignored.

6.                   What exercises are safe for knee pain?

7.                   Does walking make knee pain worse?

    Usually, walking on level ground will not be an issue. Walking on an incline or uneven surfaces may create problems.

8.                   How can I reduce knee pain at home?

    Please follow the principles of RICE.

    • Rest
    • Ice pack
    • Compression
    • Elevation

9.                   What foods help in knee joint health?

    The following foods can help

    • Milk and Dairy products
    • Green leafy vegetables
    • Fish
    • Berries
    • Citrus fruits etc

    Avoid excessive meat, sugar, processed food etc

10.               When is knee replacement surgery required?

    Knee Replacement surgery is indicated in selected individuals where the knee joint has suffered extensive end-satge degeneration (confirmed by XRay) and the day to day activities of the patients are severely hampered.

11.               Is knee replacement safe?

    Knee Replacement is generally considered a safe surgery. Before the surgery, your doctor and the Anesthetist will do a thorough health check up of your body and once you are medically fit, only then you will be taken up for surgery.

    Usually, the surgery is conducted under Spinal Anesthesia ( a form of localized anaesthesia involving only the lower limbs).

12.               Can knee pain be treated without surgery?

    Majority of the knee pain is treated without surgery. Surgery is usually the last option.

13. Why does my knee make sounds?

    Many a time, it is quite harmless. Sometimes, it can indicate major issues like injury or inflammation.
