PCL Tear Treatment in Guwahati β Complete Guide by Dr Firoz Ahmed
PCL tear is one and most serious knee injuries and commonly affects physically active individuals, especially athletes. If left untreated, it can cause long-term knee instability and early arthritis. Dr Firoz Ahmed provides diagnosis and modern personalized treatment for PCL injuries in Guwahati using both non-surgical and surgical approaches. What Is a PCL?
- β The PCL is one of the most important ligaments of the knee.
- β It is one of the strongest ligaments in the body.
- β It connects the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia).
- β A tear occurs due to sudden twisting, pivoting, or impact.
- β Isolated PCL tear is uncommon; many times it is associated with ACL tear.
Common Causes of PCL Tear
Accidents
- Dashboard injuries
- Direct impact on front of knee
- High-energy trauma causing multiple ligament injury
Sports Injuries
- Sudden collisions
- Sudden falls on knee
- Direct blow to the front of the knee
Diagnosis of PCL Tear
How It Is Diagnosed
- Clinical knee examination
- MRI scan for ligament confirmation
- X-ray to rule out fractures
Types of PCL Tear
Grade 1 β Mild Sprain
The ligament is slightly stretched but still intact. Knee stability is mostly maintained.
Grade 2 β Partial Tear
The ligament is partially torn, leading to some instability and discomfort during movement.
Grade 3 β Complete Tear
The ligament is completely torn, causing significant instability and often requiring surgical treatment.
Treatment Options for ACL Tear
Non-Surgical Treatment
- Rest and activity modification
- Physiotherapy and strengthening
- Knee bracing support
Surgical Treatment (ACL Reconstruction)
- Recommended for active individuals
- Arthroscopic minimally invasive surgery
- Restores knee stability
Why is it called PCL “Reconstruction”?
In PCL Tear surgery, repair of the damaged PCL actually doesn’t give predictive results. Therefore, here the damaged PCL is reconstructed using something called a “graft”. This graft tissue ultimately converts into a ligament like structure and works just like the damaged PCL.
What exactly is a “graft”?
During PCL reconstruction surgery, we use some tissue other than the damaged PCL to reconstruct or make a new PCL ligament. This tissue is called a “Graft”.
There are basically two types of Grafts:
Autograft:
Tendon grafts like Hamstring, Peroneus longus, Patellar Tendon, Quadriceps etc
Allograft:
Which are harvested from a cadaver. Usually not readily available here.
