What is PRP Therapy?

PRP means Platelet Rich Plasma. It is derived form the patients own blood and prepared in the lab in such a way that it contains platelets in high concentration.

Platelets are tiny cells in our blood packed with growth factors which helps in tissue repair and regeneration.

It is a completely natural way to heal tissue without using any chemicals or foreign substances.

Where does PRP work (and where it doesn't)?

Good candidates for PRP include:

PRP is not suitable for:
  • Advanced arthritis
  • Joint deformity
  • Complete tears

How does PRP actuallly work?

There has been and continues to be a lot of research into the mechanism of action of PRP in cellular level. PRP is thought to work by stimulating the body’s processes in a natural way. The probable theories are

  • Stimulates tissue growth
  • New blood vessel formation
  • Cartilage and tendon repair
  • Reduce inflammation

PRP may help reduce pain in selected individuals. However it should not be taken as a cure-all magic bullet.

How is PRP prepared?

PRP is prepared from the patient’s own blood in the lab in an sterile environment. The whole process takes 30-40 mins on average.

Step 1: Collecting 10-20 ml of patient's blood

Step 2: Spinning the blood in a centrifuge in the lab

Step 3: Separating PRP part from the rest of the blood/ plasma

Step4: Injecting the PRP into the affected area

What to expect after PRP injection?

In carefully selected individuals with proper indications, PRP can give good results.

  • The patient may experience mild discomfort at the injection site for first 1-2 days.
  • Gradual recovery is expected in 6-12 weeks time.
  • Rehab and exercise has to be continued to get optimum results.

Benefits of PRP Therapy

Minimum downtime

Unlike surgery, patients can resume normal activities immediately after surgery (at most 1-2 days of rest).

Non surgical and minimally invasive

No stitches. No hospitalization.

Safe

Since the source is the patient’s own blood, it is much safer compared to other procedures.

Cost effective

If we get the desired results, and can delay or even avoid surgery, PRP becomes a very cost effective solution in the long run.

Is PRP afe? What are the risks?

PRP is generally a very safe procedure when performed by an experienced consultant and in carefully selected patients.

Certain risks associated with PRP are:

  • Infection
  • Effusion
  • No result

Are you the right candidate for PRP?

PRP is not a magic bullet. Whether you can benefit from PRP depends on various factors like your disease status, stage, type, other conditions you may be suffering from etc.

The most important (and most overlooked factor) deciding PRP therapy result is carefully selecting the proper candidate first.

If you are an active person, generally younger and otherwise fit, and your disease condition is early to moderately progressive, then the chances of you getting benefits are much better.

What does evidence say?

Evidence from randomized trials and systematic reviews suggests that PRP may provide symptomatic relief in selected musculoskeletal conditions, particularly early osteoarthritis and chronic tendinopathies, although results remain variable and dependent on patient selection and technique (Bennell et al., JAMA 2021; Fitzpatrick et al., AJSM 2017; Belk et al., AJSM 2021; AAOS Guidelines).

Research into PRP and other Orthobiologics is an ongoing effort and more clarity is likely to emerge over time.

FAQs

Depending on your condition, you may need 1-3 injection

In early stages, PRP can help repair the damage and give good outcome. But it would be wrong to say that it can cure arthritis, specially advanced stages.

The effect varies from person to person. With proper rehab combined with PRP injection, effects can last a long time.

Usually not. Patients can resume their activities in 12-24 hours normally.

Pain is usually temporary and tolerable. In case you have more pain, you will be prescribed other medications.
