Why should Total Hip Replacement (THR) be delayed/ avoided in AVN?
In end-stage AVN Hip, THR remains a very good choice to regain function and movement

- However, there are some inherent disadvantages associated with THR, which everyone, specially the patients should be aware of.
- THR implants have limited shelf-life. Younger the patient, shorter will be the time it will last. Although nobody can accurately predict the exact time frame, but studies have shown that in very young patients they can last as less as 10 years
- Once THR implant fails, at whichever time frame, the patient has to undergo a revision surgery, which is a comparatively bigger procedure than the original surgery
- In this way, the young patients may land up in multiple surgeries over their lifetimes.
- THR surgery is a costly surgery, specially if we go for high quality modern implants.
- There will be certain restrictions after surgery, although normal daily activities can continue.
