Why is it called ACL “Reconstruction”?
In ACL Tear surgery, repair of the damaged ACL actually doesn’t give predictive results. Therefore, here the damaged ACL is reconstructed using something called a “graft”. This graft tissue ultimately converts into a ligament like structure and works just like the damaged ACL.
What exactly is a “graft”?
During ACL reconstruction surgery, we use some tissue other than the damaged ACL to reconstruct or make a new ACL ligament. This tissue is called a “Graft”.
There are basically two types of Grafts:
Autograft:
Tendon grafts like Hamstring, Peroneus longus, Patellar Tendon, Quadriceps etc
Allograft:
Which are harvested from a cadaver. Usually not readily available here.
